Carnival Special: Galaxy Make-Up

February is known worldwide as to the lovers’ months, especially the 14th. Keeping Valentine aside, there is also another thing this month is known for, carnival. Most of the countries don’t celebrate this time of the year, but here in Portugal, we had imported the Brazilian tradition. Over the time, it has changed from what carnival is known for in Brazil. Although in a lot of city throughout the country has kept the parade very similar. In Portugal, we don’t spend that much money/time as the Brazilian do – they are crazy about it! – so don’t expect huge cars with rotating platform and stuff. There is only one problem with importing this piece of culture, Brazil is located in the South hemisphere and Portugal is in the North, which means, while they are dancing and celebrating during summer, here is freezing cold – and probably rainy as well. Although, that doesn’t discourage the Portuguese to get out in the city with pretty much what looks like a bikini.

All this was a little bit of context for what is coming next. In reality, with carnival you don’t have to do cosplay or target a specific look, you can be whatever you want. Put on just a pink wig, or dress five skirts, it doesn’t matter, just have fun. In January, I started to get excited about Carnival, so I was hunting for looks. In one night, I got sucked into the galaxy makeup looks on Pinterest. Galaxy looks (from clothes to makeup) it something that has been very hyped during last year and even though I’m not the biggest fan I can’t avoid liking when I see something pretty. From that I just got obsessed.

As I said above, I could just put on the makeup, dress something that I was feeling at the moment, and went outside. Although, I decided to try and come up with a character for that look. When I started creating a backstory for this galaxy-make-up persona, I ended up creating a little world. I was up until 3 in the morning brainstorming what that character was and where it was from. I have to say, I got pretty excited and would love to get all the bits and pieces coming to life.

I don’t have any names because they are really hard to come up with, and at this point, I don’t want to focus on it. Although, I can tell you that this girl is from a planet similar to ours. She is a space biologist and she travels from planet to planet to study all the living forms she can finds. Her species are born completely white, from hair to skin tone, like a blank canvas. They are also divided by elements but don’t have any kind of magical powers. As they grow up, they start showing the colour of their element. The eyes are the most sensitive part of the body and a mirror to the true self, so most of the element is showcased around them. The hair is the last part to receive colour since it has to be in is full length to change colour. For this girl, the universe is her element, so blue is the primary colour.

Unlike humans, her species didn’t turn their backs to the planet. They started to evolve putting the planet needs always first. They hunt and kill only for food and never for sport. They are like guardians of the planet keeping the balance between the species. The space colonies have the duty to study other planets to help their own species evolve and keep the planet safe. This girl, after months of studying the human race from the safety of the spaceship, it was time to get down to Earth and interact with the Human race. And there isn’t a better time to avoid curious eyes than a carnival parade.

I’m not going to say it was easy to come up with this look. I was using some cheap makeup brand and had a few problem with applying colour in certain places. I wish the colours were more vibrant, but for a low price, this is what you get. If I ever do this makeup again, I probably won’t be darkening my eyes this much. Maybe just doing a simple cat-eye. Also, I probably would paint my hair in white or grey, since that was my original idea, but I couldn’t find any paint in time for this post. And the best part, I think it totally works with glasses! After all, she might be just trying to blend in and looking a little hipster.
